Kansas Junior Golf Scholarship

The KS Golf Foundation will award five scholarships to KS seniors who have participated in high school golf. Scholarships are based on academic performance, leadership, a written essay, and financial need. The grant is $1250 per year and is renewable for up to 4 ears. Recipents must attend a Kansas college or community college. Application is online at www.kansasgolf.org. Deadline is April 4, 2011.

Sons of the American Legion Scholarship Fund

Available to students who enter a KS technical, 2 year, or 4 year college. Applicant must be son, daughter, grandson, or grandddaughter of an American Legion member (past 3 consecutive years). Applications available in Mrs. Camarena's office. Deadline is February 15, 2011.

Charles & Annette Hill Scholarship Fund

Available to students with at least a 3.0 GPA who will major in science, engineering, or business administration. Applicant must be a descendant of American Legion member. Applications are available in Mrs. Camarena's office. Deadline is February 15, 2011.

Ted and Nora Anderson Scholarship Fund

Available to seniors attending a KS technical, 2 year, or 4 year college. Applicant must be son or daughter of a veteran; parent must have been an American Legion member for the past 3 consecutive years. Applications are available in Mrs. Camarena's office. Deadline is February 15, 2011.

Hugh Smith Scholarship Fund

Available to students attending a KS technical, 2 year, or 4 year college. Applicant must be the son or daughter of a veteran; parent must have been an American Legion member for the past 3 consecutive years. Applications available in Mrs. Camarena's office. Deadline is February 15, 2011.

Paul Flaherty Athletic Scholarship

Open to boy or girl who has participated in high school athletics. Applicant must be average or better academically. Applications have been placed in student mailboxes and are in Mrs. Camarena's files. Deadline is July 15, 2011.

Dr. Irvin Cower Memorial Baseball Scholarship

Available to senior who has participated in the KS American Legion baseball program. Applications are available from Mrs. Camarena. Deadline is July 15, 2011.

American Legion Shooting Sports Scholarship

Open to any KS boy or girl who has participated in American Legion sponsored Shooting Sports program in the state and regional levels. Applications are available from Mrs. Camarena. Deadline is February 15, 2011.

American Legion Music Scholarhship

Scholarship available for students who have a distinguished background in music and will major or minor in music at a KS college. Applicant must be an average or better student academically. Applications are available in counselor's files and have been placed in student mailboxes. Deadline is February 15, 2011.

National High School Oratorical Contest (American Legion)

Each year, seniors are invited to compete for over $138,000 in scholarships. Last year we had a local winner, who won $600. This program helps students receive a better understanding of the Constitution, and a gain a deeper respect and understanding of duties as American citizens. Complete rules and information are available in the counselor's office. Deadline for entry is January 5, 2011.

Mensa Scholarship

The Mensa Education and Research Foundation it holding its annual scholarship essay contest. Deadline is January 15, 2011. Entries must be mailed to Scholarship Chair, Mid-American Mensa Foundation, 2902 Nevada Terr, Ottawa KS 66067. Applications have been placed in seniors' boxes. Students will be judged on the essay about the career goals, including specific information or experience students have taken to reach goals, why they will succeed (persuasiveness), and grammar, spelling, and punctuation. KFC Colonel's Scholarship

KFC is offering a scholarship to seniors with financial need and an entrepreneurial spirit. Students must have a 2.75 GPA, enroll in a KS college, and demonstrate financial need. Applications will be online from December 1, 2010 - February 9, 2011.

John Deere Tech Open House

Scholarship Essay Contest

KS Masonic Grand Lodge is holding a scholarship essay contest for KS juniors and seniors, with $12,000 in prizes awarded. Essay topic is: "How have social networking websites changed the way people interact?" Essays must be 300-500 words. Complete rules have been placed in seniors' mailboxes or can be obtained by emailing Mrs. Camarena. Essays are due to Mrs. Camarena by 10/28/10. Prizes are $500 (4 Honorable Mention winners); $1000 (4th place); $2000 (3rd place); $3000 (2nd place); $4000 (1st place).

KU & KSU Scholarship Deadlines Approaching

November 1 is the priority deadline for scholarships at both KU and K-State. If you are planning to attend either school, please apply for both admissions and scholarships by this date. They will accept scholarships later (KU until Dec. 1; K-State even later); however, first consideration is given to the applications received by November 1.

World Class Mediacom Scholarship

Mediacom hosts a scholarship competition each year for students in its service area. We have had two OCHS winners in the past for $1000 scholarhsips. The application can be accessed at http://www.mediacomworldclass.com. Paper applications are also available in the counselor's office. Students must include two reference letters and a transcript with their application. Deadine is February 11, 2011.

KU Hixson Opportunity Award

KU is offering the Hixson Opportunity Award to financially enable students to attend KU who have:
  • faced personal challenges or hardship
  • met KU entrance criteria
  • demonstrated financial need (determined by the FAFSA)
  • first-generation college students will receive priority consideration.

KU School of Music Scholarships

Vocational Education Scholarship

Each year, the KS Board of Regents sponsors a vocational educational scholarship for students all across Kansas. To be eligible for the scholarship, you must attend a KS vocational or technical college and take the vocational test. The test is offered on November 6 and March 5 in either Topeka or Emporia. Students can access the application online at www.kansasregents.org/resources/PDF/640-applicationbrochure2011.pdf. An OCHS student did receive this scholarship last year, so please look into it if you are attending a vocational or technical school.

Washburn Tech Open House

Washburn Tech is hosting an open house on October 7 from 4:30-8 p.m. All programs will be available to visitors, and advisers will be available to answer enrollment and financial aid questions. No pre-registration is required. Programs include: building technology, construction, diesel mechanics, nursing, electronics, computer networking and many more.

KU Scholarhsip Hall Sneak Peek

KU is hosting a scholarship hall sneak peek on Saturday, September 18. Students who live in scholarship halls get a lower housing rate. To register for this event, go to http://housing.ku.edu. The event begins at 1:00 p.m.

Prudential Spirit of Community Award

All high school volunteers are encouraged to apply for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award. Each school will choose one winner from their applicants to advance to the next level of competition. Local winners will receive special recognition, state winners receive $1000 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. To be eligible, students must have participated in a volunteer activity since September 1, 2009. Applications must completed by November 1, 2010. You can apply online at www.principals.org/spirit.

Wendy's High School Heisman Scholarship

All senior athletes are encouraged to apply for the Wendy's High School Heisman scholarship. The High School Heisman takes into consideration athletic accomplishment, academic achievement, and leadership. Applications are due October 3, 2010. HCC is hosting an open house for its fire science dept. on October 13, 2010. Students who attend will see cutting-edge firefighting equipment, speak with firefighters, and get an overview of the fire science program. Wichita State Scholarship Competition

Wichita State is holding its annual Distinguished Scholarship Invitational. Over $500,000 in scholarships are given away based on students' performance. To be considered, students must have a 3.5 GPA and a 24 ACT score. They must also apply to WSU. Students may be able to compete in the scholarship competition should they meet these criteria.
